1. We’ve all been taught that stealing from others is wrong. There are plenty of things that we would never think to take from others and claim as our own. Why then, is plagiarism, which is a form of stealing, such a problem among college students?
2. Part of the problem is that there are many different kinds of plagiarism, and students do are not always conscious that they are plagiarizing. However, it is the student’s responsibility to make sure their papers are properly quoted and cited to avoid plagiarism, because the consequences can be severe regardless of intention.
3. You also have to recognize that not everything needs to be cited. This can be tricky, and if you’re ever in doubt, either ask your instructor or err on the side of caution and cite it.
4. Plagiarism is easy to commit, but also easy to catch. And to us instructors, it’s insulting and hurtful when we see you being dishonest in your writing. So don’t do it.
